Professor Demetris Yannopoulos, MD, and his team at the University of Minnesota conducted the first randomized clinical trial of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) resuscitation versus standard Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) treatment in patients with Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) and refractory ventricular fibrillation.
The use of ECMO-facilitated resuscitation achieves three main goals when deployed in patients with refractory cardiac arrest:
1) Provides reliable cardiopulmonary support
2) Allows for the facilitation of identification and treatment of severe coronary artery disease with chronic and acute coronary occlusion
3) It is a bridge to recovery
